The passive voice is a verb form where the subject of the sentence receives the action.
E.g. the house was designed by the architect.
This construction puts the emphasis on the house, whereas in the active voice, the sentence would be:
`The architect designed the house`, when the subject is clearly the `architect`.
To form the passive in Spanish you just need to use the appropriate tense of `ser` with a past participle.
e.g. the meals were prepared by the chef.
Notice also that the past participle acts as an adjective so must agree with the gender and number (plural) of the subject, `meals`. |
La voz pasiva es una forma del verbo donde el sujeto de la oración recibe la acción. La casa fue diseñada por el arquitecto.
Esta construcción pone el énfasis en la casa, mientras que en la voz activa, la frase sería:
"El arquitecto diseñó la casa", cuando el tema es claramente el 'arquitecto'.
Para formar la voz pasivo en español sólo se necesita usar la tensa de 'ser' con un participio pasado.
e.g. las comidas fueron preparadas por el chef.
Observe también que el participio pasado actúa como un adjetivo, por lo que debe estar de acuerdo con el género y número (plural) sobre el tema, "comidas". |

However, there is another passive construction which is used extensively for a variety of situations. It is called the pasiva refleja or pasiva pronominal because it uses the reflexive pronoun se with the third person singular or plural of the verb. It is also called the incomplete passive voice because there is no named or specific agent. |
Sin embargo, existe otra construcción pasiva que se utiliza ampliamente para una variedad de situaciones. Se llama la pasiva refleja o pasiva pronominal porque utiliza el pronombre reflexivo se con la tercera persona singular o plural del verbo. Se llama también la voz pasiva incompleta porque no hay ningún agente nombrado o específico. |
The main situations where this `se` construction is used is as follows:-
a) The subject is not a noun,
se alquila este coche –. this car is for hire
b) No specific or named agent,
se vende bueno vino a Tescos – good wine is sold at Tescos.
c) The common `it is said, they say, etc`
se dicen el club de golf is bueno – they say the golf club is good.
d) When the agent is omitted,
se hacian mejoras buenas – good improvements were made.
e) To emphasise an impersonal construction,
se renovo la habitacion – the room was refurbished.

Las principales situaciones donde se utiliza esta construcción 'se' es como sigue:-
a) el tema no es un sustantivo,
this car is for hire - se alquila este coche.
b) Ningún agente específico o nombre,
good wine is sold at Tescos - se vende bueno vino a Tescos.
c) El común "se dice, dicen, etc"
they say the golf club is good - se dicen el club de golf is bueno.
d) Cuando el agente se omite,
good improvements were made - se hacian mejoras buenas.
e) Hacer hincapié en una construcción impersonal,the room was refurbished - se renovo la habitacion.
