Alicante

Alicante lies a few kilometres north of its well known airport. It is a large city with a population of over 300,000 people and has an impressive Town Hall in the form of an old baroque palace with two towers at each end.

Alicante esta situado unos pocos kilometros al norte de su famoso aeropuerto. Es una ciudad grande con un poblacion de treiscientos mil gente y tiene un Ayuntamiento impresionante en la forma de un palacio barroco viejo con dos torres a cada extremo

Walk two short blocks and you are on the famous ‘Explanada’. An elegant promenade running along the edge of the port, and connecting new developments at both ends of the splendid marina.

Camina dos manzanas cortas y esta en la famosa ‘Explanada’, un paseo elegante paralelo al lado del puerto, entre urbanizaciones nuevas a cada lados de la marina esplendida.

At the southern side of the port there is the modern Panoramis centre which comprises a number of shops, restaurants, bars and leisure activities. It is well named as you can see from the photo.

Al lado sur hay el centro moderno Panoramis que tiene un numero de tiendas, restaurantes, bares y actividades de recreativas.

At the other side of the marina, the ‘El Puerto’ has even more restaurants and bars. In 2008 there was a lot of development at this side of the port. When it is completed, the whole marina area will look fantastic.

Al otro lado del marina, ‘El Puerto’ tiene tan mas restaurantes y bares. En 2008 hacia mucho urbanizacion a este lado del puerto. En finalizacion, todo el barrio va parecer fantastico.

Just around the corner, is the famous ‘La Postiguet’ beach,. It is a large and clean beach with shallow water ideal for families and ideal for relaxing. Although a word of warning for if you lie on the beach. There is a small army of oriental people offering to massage every part of your torso, for ten euros. They can be quite persistent!

Simplemente a la vuelta de la esquina, es la famosa playa ‘La Postiguet’. Es una playa grande y limpieza con agua poco profundo ideel para familias. Aunque una advertencia si usted se acosta a la playa. Hay un ejercito pequeno de gente Oriental que ofrecer a masajear toda parte de su torso, por diez euros. Ellos pueden estar muy persistente.

At the beginning of May on La Postiguet, you can enjoy the magnificent festival of kites. A wonderful weekend of colourful kite displays of every shape and form. Not to be missed.

Al principios de mayo a La Postiguet, se puede disfrutar del Festival magnifico de Cometas. Un fin de semana maravilloso de exposiciones de cometas de colores muy vivos de todas formas. No se perde.

By far the most striking landmark in Alicante is the Castillo de Santa Barbara built at over 500 feet on top of Mount Benacantil. It is easy to believe that historically the fortress was extremely important with its commanding position and views

The panorama from the summit is phenomenal, on a clear day you can see for over 50 miles in all directions. From this height one can fully appreciate the extent of the city of Alicante.

The view over the adjacent ‘old town’ is excellent. You can see the route to the ‘Ermita’ the modest little church which was a famous 19th century shrine next to the original walls of the city

Starting at the Town Hall go past the church of Santa Maria, through the old Santa Cruz district. At the Plaza del Carmen and take the steps up Carrer San Rafael following the signs.

In early May there is a weekend of the festival of crosses in this pretty area. There are some wonderful decorations of flowers in the form of crucifixes and a competition for the best display. The streets are adorned with bunting and there are parties throughout the district.

If you leave Plaza del Carmen by Carrer de Argensola then turn left, you will arrive at the very impressive San Nicolas cathedral. There are lots of pavement restaurants in this area, along the Calle Mayor. Try one of the interesting menu del dia on offer.

One of the best eateries in this area is Al Medina in Plaza Santisima Faz. A really smart, efficient resto with great food and a friendly cosmopolitan staff. Ask for Nory the charming house manager from Algeria. He is really friendly and if you can manage a little French, he will take care of you like royalty.

Un de mejor restos cerca aqui es Al Medina en la plaza Santisima Faz. Un muy chic restaurante eficiente con comida delicisiosa y un personal simpatica y cosmopolita. Pregunta de Nory el camarero jefe encantador de Argelia. Es muy simpatico y si habla un poco Frances, el usted trata a cuerpo de rey.

For the rare rainy day, the ideal destination is the archeological museum or the MARQ. It covers the history of Alicante through all the major periods. However it uses modern video and audio digital technology to bring this history to life. It won the European Museum of the Year Award in 2004. Allow three to four hours, it really is a good visit.

After a full morning shopping why not lunch at the 26rd floor restaurant of the Hotel Tryp Gran Sol. The views around Alicante are stunning and the food is top class too.

If you prefer to spend more time on beaches, take a bus north for ten minutes to San Juan Playa. When you see the size of the beach you will be impressed. It is about five kilometres long and a hundred metres wide of fine clean sand. Si usted prefiere a pasar mas tiempo a las playas, coge un autobus al norte por diez minutos a San Juan Playa. Cuando mira la playa estara impresionado. Ella mide cerca cinco kilometros de largo y un cien de ancho de arena magnifica y limpieza. Un otro consejo – no coge el tranvia, El viaje dura veinte minutos y la terminal esta todavia un caminar de veinte minutos de la playa!

For an authentic Spanish holiday, Alicante is an excellent spot. It is not a typical tourist centre, and there are no theme parks or rowdy night life. However if you enjoy good food, wine and a friendly Spanish ambience, you will appreciate Alicante.

Para las vacaciones de Espanol autenticas, Alicante es un sitio excelente. No esta un centro de turistas tipico, y no hay los parques tematicos o vida nocturna ruidosa. Sin embargo, si le gusta comida buena, vino y un ambiente Espanol simpatico, usted va a apreciar Alicante.
