Cartagena

Cartagena is quite a large city with a population of about 200,000. It has always been an important naval station because of its large sheltered natural harbour, and big shipyard. In more recent times it has grown in popularity as a tourist destination and the city has worked hard to stimulate this development.
The Ayuntamiento of Cartagena has got to be one of the finest in Spain. The city has significantly invested in the surrounding marble-like plaza. cartagena ayuntamiento

The Gran Hotel de Cartagena sits in architectural splendour on calle mayor. The road is largely pedestrianised so no need to watch out for traffic. cartagena gran hotel
cartagena muralla All along the harbour front there is a wall built by King Carlos 111 in the 1700`s.

Perhaps not surprisingly for such an important naval city there is an excellent Naval Museum and the rather unusual spectacle of a full-size submarine on the harbour side! This craft was apparently designed by Isaac Peral, who was born in Cartagena. It was completed in 1888 and was one of the first U-boats to be constructed.

cartagena view from the castle When you climb Concepcion Hill to the old castle you get a truly spectacular panorama from the ramparts. This shot is just a portion of this overlooking the impressive port.

The Roman amphitheatre dates back to around the time of Christ. The city had already been under Roman rule for two hundred years, so I guess this construction was a little overdue!
If you need a quick route down (or an easier route up), look out for the steel elevator up to the castle. It`s free so probably best to use it both ways! cartagena elevator to the castle
cartagena impressive architecture The great thing about this city is the impressive variety of architecture on every corner. This building was on the route from the castle back to the bus-station.
