JOSÉ ÁNGEL HEVIA VELASCO

Hevia was born in Villaviciosa in Asturias. It was in 1992 when he won first prize for solo bagpipes in a Celtic music festival in Brittany, that his talent was uncovered. He is now renowned for his success in popularising the electronic bagpipes in Spain and the rest of Europe. A special type of electronic MIDI bagpipes was invented by two of his students. His single, `Busindre Reel`(No Man`s Land) became so popular that he began to be invited to perform all over Europe. A love of percussion explains the four players in his eight piece band, which also includes his sister, Maria. However, his album, Tierra de Nadie, gives full expression to a range of instruments including the didgeridoo, violin, flute, oud, guitars and keyboards. There are some superb tracks such as: Barganz; La Linea Trazada; and Sobrepena. Like many musicians, Hevia loves to encourage his fellow artists, and oftens shares the stage with a variety of talent, including his students. For instance, the vocals on his video are provided by the all female Collectivu Ethnografico Muyeres, who use tambourines as accompaniment. He loves to combine Celtic and traditional Asturian elements in his music, which has now spread as far as Walt Disney World in the USA.
