Film Preview: Going back to reality - Portraying Pablo Picasso

There will be several screenings of the Sin Fin Cinema's portrayal of Picasso, between March and June 2012 at London locations including Ciné Lumiere and the Barbican. They are documentaries with video art based on Picasso's own work itself and a nice follow on from the Picasso exhibition at the Tate Britain giving new insights into this art world great.

Pablo Picasso was born in 1881 in Malaga the son of an art teacher. He attended the Barcelona School of Fine Arts and was a gifted student. He is probably the most famous of the Modern Artists of the twentieth century and produced thousands of paintings, prints, sculptures and ceramics over 75 years.

Pablo Picasso nació en Málaga en 1881, hijo de un profesor de arte. Asistió a la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Barcelona y fue un estudiante con talento. Es probablemente el más famoso de los artistas modernos del siglo XX, y produjo miles de pinturas, grabados, esculturas y cerámicas durante más de 75 años.

The artist evolved through several different painting styles. The period from 1900 to 1904 was the Blue Period. He used different shades of blue to emphasise a melancholic style of life. His subjects were thin, with half-starved bodies, but his style was superb. The next period was the Rose Period, and was characterised by a friendly pink tone with subjects from the circus.

When Picasso moved to Paris he met many other famous artists like Joan Miro, Henri Matisse and George Braques. He developed a great friendship with Matisse, the master of French Fauvism. He also worked with Cezanne, Braques and Juan Gris to develop the Cubist style of painting. This style involves painting its subjects in basic geometrical shapes.

Cuando Picasso se trasladó a París conoció a muchos otros artistas famosos como Joan Miró, Henri Matisse y George Braques. Desarrolló una gran amistad con Matisse, el maestro del fauvismo francés. También trabajó con Cézanne, Braques y Juan Gris para desarrollar el estilo Cubista de la pintura. Este estilo consiste en pintar sus súbditos en formas geométricas básicas.

A later development of this was called Synthetic Cubism, where multiple views of a subject are shown at the same time from different perspectives on the same picture.

Picasso painted his most famous work Guernica in 1937 as a protest against the bombing of the Basque village in the Spanish Civil War. It was created for the Spanish Pavilion of the Paris World's Fair, and is a large canvas mural in black, white and greys. He used symbolic forms like a dying horse and weeping woman, which are often repeated in later works. Guernica now resides in the Queen Sofia Centre of Art in Madrid.

Fue creada para el Pabellón Español de la Exposición Universal de París, y es un mural enorme de lienzo en blanco, negro y grises. Usó formas simbólicas como un caballo muerto y una mujer llorando, que se repiten a menudo en obras posteriores. Guernica ahora reside en el Centro de Arte Reina Sofía en Madrid.

Picasso was a bit of a lady's man - he was married twice but had at least another 10 lovers throughout his life.

When the Mona Lisa was stolen in 1911, the police questioned Picasso as a suspect because a friend of his, the poet Guillaume Apollinaire told them that Picasso may have been involved. It was not true and Picasso was released.
