Valladolid is a small, pleasant colonial city halfway between Mérida and Cancún. Before it became Valladolid, the city was a Maya settlement called Zací, which means "white hawk".
There is one cenote in town, Cenote Zací, in a small park. Cenotes are sink holes filled with groundwater. In Yucatán there are over 3000 cenotes, with only 1400 actually studied and registered. The Maya called them "dzonot", which the conquering Spaniards translated as "cenote". Cenotes were once the only resource for fresh water in the local jungle. They were also the sacred places of the Maya, because they represented the entrance to the underworld.
A trail leads down close to the water in Cenote Zací. Caves, stalactites and hanging vines contribute to the prehistoric feel. The park also has a large palapa restaurant. Admission is $1.50. |
