MÉRIDA, MÉXICO

Merida is the capital city of the state of Yucatan. It is known as the White City due to the many buildings made of white limestone or painted white. If you want to experience the Mexican culture whilst also staying fairly close to the Caribbean sea, then Merida is an ideal location. Regional food and traditional music and dancing can be found in restaurants, theatres and shops near the main square and in the mansions along Paseo de Montejo.

If you stay near the downtown main square, you will be able to walk to the majority of the attractions.

Plaza Principal
From the Main Square you can see: The Cathedral, Palacio Municipal (Merida's town hall), Casa de Montejo (former home of the conquerer of Yucatan) and Palacio de Gobierno. Sight-seeing tours can be taken by horse or buggy from the square.

Casa Montejo
Casa Montejo is one of the finest examples of Spanish Colonial architecture. Construction on this grandiose home of the founding fathers of Merida started in 1549.

Cathedral
This magnificent cathedral is the largest church in the Yucatan peninsula and is known for the murals depicting the meeting between Montejo and the Mayan King Tutl Xiu. Construction of this cathedral began in 1561. View the cathedral in 360°.

Palacio de Gobierno
The Governor's Palace, built in 1892, houses 27 wall size murals illustrating the somewhat violent bloody history of the Yucatan.

Casa Montejo
Casa Montejo es uno de los mejores ejemplos de la arquitectura colonial española. La construcción de esta casa espléndida de los fundadores de Mérida comenzó en 1549.

Catedral
Esta catedral magnífica es la iglesia más grande en la península Yucatán y es famosa por sus murales que pintan la reunión entre Montejo y el rey maya Tutl Xiu. La construcción de esta catedral comenzó en 1561. Ver la catedral en 360°.

Palacio de Gobierno

La Ermita de Santa Isabel
Named after the mother of John the Baptist, this is a quiet and relaxing place with beautiful gardens and statues. It is located just outside of the city wall.

Paseo de Montejo Boulevard
Inaugurated in 1904, this wide boulevard resembles the Champs Elysées in Paris and is a world away from the bustle of the central square. it is a magnificent setting for the palaces of the barons, stately homes, shops and quaint restaurants.

Regional Anthropology Museum
It is housed in one of the most beautiful palaces of Paseo de Montejo and it contains some of the most exclusive artefacts from the Maya civilization to present day in display.

La Ermita de Santa Isabel
Lleva el nombre de la madre de Juan la Bautista; es un lugar tranquilo donde se puede relajar en los jardines preciosos con estatuas. Se encuentra justo fuera de la muralla de la ciudad.

Paseo de Montejo
Inaugurado en 1904, este bulevar ancho se parece a los Champs Elysées en Paris y es otro mundo en comparación con la Plaza Principal. Es un lugar magnífico que contiene los palacios de los barones, las casa solariegas, tiendas y restaurantes pintorescos.

Museo Regional de Antropología
Se encuentra el museo en uno de los palacios más preciosos en el Paseo de Montejo y contiene algunos de los artefactos más exclusivos desde la civilización maya hasta hoy en día.
