IBIZA

The third main island in the Balearics, Ibiza or The White Island is currently renowned as a favourite destination for groups of young party goers. However, the island has much more to offer than just a hedonistic vacation for clubbers. There is an impressive choice of beaches along a stunning coastline from secluded coves to busy tourist spots with the famous beach bars - the chiringuitos, at your disposal.

The history of Ibiza goes back to the Carthaginians and further, and there are some excellent museums which chart the development of the culture of the island. In the old town there are still buildings originating from the medieval period including the magnificent cathedral.

IBIZA TOWN / IBIZA (CIUDAD)
Ibiza-town.jpg

The town sits on an elevated position overlooking the harbour and bay below, with the ancient fortress still in evidence. It is definitely one of the most visited spots on the island and it is not difficult to see why.

The bustling harbour and Sa Peña quarter are major attractions in the warm summer evenings with a great variety of shops and bars to entice the tourists.

The choice of restaurants is immense, from local tapas and traditional cuisine to Mexican and Chinese fayre.

After dinner, take a stroll up the narrow cobbled streets of the old town, D'Alt Vila, with a history going back 3000 years, to one of the vantage points for great views across the bay. If you are lucky enough to have booked accommodation here, all these delights are on your doorstep. The tourist information office on Av de los Andenes near the harbour, has leaflets describing various walks through D`Alt Vila and the medieval festival which occurs in May each year.

In a recent magazine a reader described her experiences on a short introduction to Spanish course on the island run by the Instituto de Idiomas. She was part of a small group based at a lovely small hotel Can Lluc in the rural setting of the Sant Rafel vineyards. Her teacher, Irene Verdugo, covered all the basic language for conversing in common situations experienced in a foreign country. The Instituto uses classroom based courses and less formal approaches like taking students into real-life situations in hotels, bars and beach! Students are usually free in the afternoon to relax and visit the island and all it has to offer. Sounds like a great way to improve your Spanish! contact the Instituto on http://www.en.ii-ibiza.es/
