EL GRECO

EL GRECO 1541-1614

A Greek by birth, El Greco went to Venice in the late 1560s to train under Titian. He later worked in Rome before moving in 1577 to Toledo, his adopted home. At the time Toledo was a religious centre and great spot for art commissions for various churches and monasteries in the area. He soon received his first job from Santo Domingo del Antiguo on the `Assumption of the Virgin`. This, and other works around the same time, like `Trinity` and `Resurrection`, demonstrated his growing unique talent.

Thus, further commissions followed like the `Disrobing of Christ` for Toledo Cathedral, and the `Martyrdom of St Maurice`.

In the late 1580s he completed `Burial of the Count de Orgaz` which is highly rated as one of his best compositions in his Mannerist style. All the action occurs in the frontal plane.

Over the next 20 years to his death, El Greco produced an enormous amount of work. This included a whole range of portraits like the `Portrait of Jerónimo de Cevallos` and Fray Hortensio Felix de Paravicino. His paintings sometimes included slightly distorted figures to emphasise some particular aspect of the composition. This style is sometimes suggested as typical of the artist. However, by far the majority of his work was honest representation of the subject with plenty of light and colour. He died in Toledo in 1614 and it`s fair to say his genius was not recognised until his style inspired painters like Picasso towards the end of the 19th century.
