DENIA

Denia is easily reached from Alicante airport; you just head north for about 50 miles. It is an excellent resort for a relaxing break. Initial impressions are of a fairly quiet little town, but actually there are 30,000 inhabitants and plenty of things to do and see. The harbour is very large and impressive. There are ferries to the Balearic islands or you can charter a boat from the lively commercial port. The fishing fleet is still very active and unloads catches every day along the dock where a great variety of fresh fish can be snapped up at reasonable prices. At the southern end is a smart marina built in recent years with many facilities for water sports. It`s easy to believe that this town has had its fair share of prosperity over the years.

On the front opposite the harbour there are a number of good restaurants including some offering excellent paella dishes. Walking further around the seafront road there is another cluster of recommendable eateries.

Try the superb paella at the El Port restaurant along with a wide selection of other dishes in a friendly atmosphere. There`s good wine too. There is also great seafood at La Barqueta - get a good table on the sun terrace. Nearby is the Ticino which is great value - pizzas a must.

When you are ready to explore the town itself head for Calle de Marques de Campo, which starts almost at the seafront and leads right up into the heart of the town. This is a great area for shopping. Look out for the sweets and raisin products in the confectionery shops, they are a delight.

Denia used to have an important raisin industry, and the traditional delicacies are still available. In the evening the road is barricaded off for the safety of pedestrians.

denia calle campo

Enjoy a drink at an outdoor table of the many bars and restaurants. For authentic local cuisine try the excellent Tasca Eulalia restaurant and watch the world go by while eating tapas or valenciana speciality dishes accompanied by a nice wine. After postres have a small Muscatello as a digestive.

One of the best attractions in the area is the imposing castle which towers above the town. It is easily reached by either walking from the town centre or driving around the rear and parking on the narrow side streets which lead up to the entrance. There is a phenomenal view over the rooftops to the sea. You can see the promenade with its palms and the golden beach stretching north to Las Marinas and south to Les Rotes.

The whole town is captured within the panoramic view and the surrounding countryside including the impressive mountain Montgo appears to be in touching distance.Don`t miss a visit to the museum in the Palau del Governador whilst you are in the castle. It paints the picture of the whole history of Roman times up to the present date.

denia castillo

When you feel like a bit more exercise, why not take an excursion to Montgo. It`s easily reached if you take the main Passeig del Saladar and aim left towards the hills. It is only a few minutes out of the town and it`s signposted. When you arrive, there is ample parking at the start of a well constructed pathway stretching up and around the mountain. Once you have got a little height, the views are stunning all around the Denia region. You can see great expanses of orange and lemon trees and vines surrounding farms and villas. All the coastline from Gandia in the north to Javier in the south is encompassed. At one point on the track there is an optional little diversion up to see a cave which was supposed to have been inhabited in ancient times. On the way up to the cave it appears to be inaccessibly perched halfway up a sheer face. However as you approach the cave the path is fairly good and not too close to the edge of the precipice. The great thing about walking up a mountain is that it`s so easy to come back down again, and it`s good fun to nosey at all the villas in the pretty foothills.

Denia is close to many other attractions on the Costa Blanca. The neighbouring town of Javier is worth a visit, but don`t take the CV 736 coast road unless you like hairpins. Head for the main road inland N 332 - it`s longer but much easier on the driver and passengers.Slightly further a field but well within easy driving distance, Calpe and Benidorm are great for day visits.

Denia-Javier
