La Pineda - Costa Brava

La Pineda is an attractive resort on the Costa Dorada, the ‘golden coast’ which takes its name from the phenomenal stretches of golden sandy beaches south west of Barcelona.
The nearest airport is the tiny Reus about 6 miles inland.  It is just about capable of handling the waves of tourists to the three local resorts. If you book transport to your hotel or apartment, the chances are that you will drive through the brash Salou, the biggest of the local resorts, on the way to the more tranquil La Pineda.

The emphasis in the resort is definitely Spanish, so there is a good authentic feel to the restaurants and shops.  On the northern side of the resort there are a large number of holiday apartments and complexes geared towards the Spanish tourist.
On the other hand, in the central area of the town, you can find a big selection of hotels and accomodation, which are increasingly being used by other nationalities like the British and Russians.

A main attraction of the resort is the large sandy beach and palm tree lined promenade, the Passeig de Pau Casals. This is where the action is all day long and through the evening. In the season, there are all sorts of shows, music and activities all along this area. It is ideal for a stroll before or after dinner and to enjoy an interesting selection of surprises. Its most prominent feature is the Pines de Mariscal, a pine tree sculpture with fronds created out of huge metal dishes.

There is an excellent choice of eateries to suit all tastes and ranging from fast food to refined cuisine.  Enjoy typically spanish fayre in the -------- restaurant, which has its own miniature rain forest and water feature at one side of the large establishment. The food is great too.
If you prefer a more quiet and elegant meal, try the ---- hotel restaurant right on the front facing the sea. The menu always has something intriguing and is cooked to perfection for a surprisingly reasonable price.

For younger tastes, try a selection of pizza or steak restaurants along the Pineda Drink boulevard. This is an excellent stretch of entertainment bars, cafes, ice cream kiosks and restos running alongside the promenade, near the entrance to Aquopolis.
Not to be missed, Aquopolis water park is ideal on a warm sunny day. It has  large lawned areas for picnics and sunbathing, bordering the enormous swimming pools and water slides. The ‘kamikaze’ toboggan runs and ‘black hole’ ride are very fast and ideal for the brave hearted, but check your heart condition first!  There is also a fantastic dolphinarium and sea lion show in a special arena near the entrance.

There are bars all along most of the 1.5 mile promenade.  Some stay open fairly late, but most not beyond midnight.  In common with a lot of Spanish towns, they restrict the potential for late night raucous behaviour.  If you are young, and this is what you prefer – try Salou next door!
Also don’t miss out on some of the genuine spanish cafes hidden up the side streets. There was a modest place across from our hotel with very basic tables and chairs. However the menu del dia was typically spanish, and including wine was something ridiculously low like 6 euros !  Be sure in a morning not to miss out on a breakfast of freshly fried churros with chocolate, but don’t burn your tongue on the piping hot chocolate. Don’t even think about the calories and fat!

Just 2 or 3 miles out of town, near Vila Seca, there is also the Universal Studios Port Aventura theme park. Another ‘not to be missed’, this is an enormous Disney style park with five themed lands (China, Polynesia, Mediterranea, Mexico and the Far West) and an impressive collection of rollercoasters, water slides, live shows and countless kiosks, gift shops, bars and restaurants. Dare someone to ride the death defying Dragon Khan roller coaster with its eight loop-the-loops. There is also an impressive firework finale at the end of the day.

La Pineda has obviously retained its own style of quiet, but interesting, family friendly holiday resort. If you like a good beach and prefer a more tranquil atmosphere rather than a loud noisy nigthlife, this is an excellent place to take a holiday.

  At-a-glance useful vocab:

Unfortunately sometimes when you are on holiday, you need some medical help. Whether you have sunburn or have cut your foot on the beach, you need to visit the local Pharmacy or doctor. Being able to tell them which bit hurts, will help you get the right treatment.
